The Constellation
The Hydra is a constellation depicting a water serpent. It is one of the largest constellations in the sky. It covers almost one fourth of the the entire sky with its long body. The head of the serpent is in a circlet of stars. Alphard, the heart of the serpent, is a very bright star. This is why it was chosen as the Hydra’s heart. Zeta and Epsilon are two bright stars included in its head. The stars included in the head are Zeta, Epsilon, Delta, and Eta. The Hydra is in the center of many other famous constellations like Leo and Libra.
Hydra In Greek Mythology
The Hydra, in Greek mythology, was a
nine-headed monster that attacked travelers as
they passed through the ocean. Greek
mythology has highly impacted the naming of Solar bodies and is shown here with the Hydra.
This is an artists depiction based on Greek mythology what he/she thinks the Hydra would look like. It is obviously different from the constellation but the idea remains the same.
