What is NASA?
NASA stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration. NASA is the United States government agency that is responsible for science and technology related to air space. The Space Age started in 1957 with the launch of the Soviet satellite Sputnik. NASA was created in 1958. The agency was created to oversee U.S. space exploration and aeronautics research.
What does NASA do?
NASA's Education Office helps teachers to prepare the students who will be the engineers, scientists, astronauts and other NASA workers of the future. They will be the adventurers that will continue the exploration of the solar system and universe in the years to come. NASA offers training to help teachers learn new ways to teach science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The agency also involves students in NASA missions to help them get excited about learning.
NASA's vision is to reach for new heights and reveal the unknown so that what we do and learn will benefit all humankind. To do that, thousands of people have been working around the world and off of it for 50 years, trying to answer some basic questions. What's out there in space? How do we get there? What will we find? What can we learn there, or learn just by trying to get there, that will make life better here on Earth?
What has NASA done?
NASA has learned more about flying in space and resulted in the first human landing on the moon in 1969.NASA's robotic space probes have visited every planet in the solar system. Telescopes have allowed scientists to look at the far reaches of space. Satellites have revealed a wealth of data about Earth, resulting in valuable information such as a better understanding of weather patterns. These aircraft include planes that have set new records.
NASA technology has contributed to many items used in everyday life, from smoke detectors to medical tests. The greatest accomplishment for NASA and the United States is the moon landing of Neil Armstrong and others on the Apollo 11.
