SPACE SHUTTLES
The manager of the space shuttle was Wayne Hale who then became NASA’s associate. Hale has been deputy since 2005, John Shannon is the one who had succeeded Hale to be the space shuttle manager.
A space shuttle is 122.17 feet in length, 56.67 feet high, and 78 feet wingspan. The shuttle weighs 4.5 million lbs just at lift off and 230,000 lbs when in the sky.
In between the middle of the first launch (April 12, 1981) and the last one (July 21, 2011) NASA had a space shuttle fleet in Discovery, Challenger, Endeavour, Atlantis, and Columbia. They all had flown 135 missions.
One of the questions often asked was, “will you be able to sit in the shuttle?” Well the answer was that you will not be able to be inside or touch the shuttle but they will allow you to get as close as possible, so you can see the inside of it. When the Earth is in orbit the space shuttle travels at a speed about 17,500mph.
Only 34/135 launches were done at night.
In Columbia the space shuttle got destroyed, on February 1st, 2003 while over Texas and returning from a 16 day trip to space. In 1981, NASA's space shuttles have been going from Florida's coast
There were 6 shuttles made by NASA and flown ever since 1981. Enterprise, Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavour are the 6 space shuttles. The first flight was on April 12, 1981 and the last was on July 21, 2011. Out of all 6 space shuttles, all but Enterprise was flown and went up to space. The estimated cost of the space shuttle in 1981 was $192 billion.
The top shuttle speed is 28,000 kilometers per hour. It takes only about eight minutes for the Space Shuttle to reach a speed of more than 17,000 miles per hour. The energy released by the three Space Shuttle main engines is equivalent to the output of 23 Hoover Dams. The amount of fuel consumed by the orbiter every 25 seconds is equivalent to the size of an average swimming pool.
